Dr. Alvaro earned his Doctorate in Psychology and Counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He specializes in marriage and family therapy, licensed in the state of Hawaii and North Carolina. Jay is a Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), certified MBTI practitioner, and a certified PREPARE/ENRICH Counselor.
As a Christian counselor, Jay believes in the foundation of relationships, and his faith significantly influences his work. This is integrated with family systems and cognitive-behavioral understandings of how people work. He strives for a balanced integration of psychological principles with biblical truths, working with individuals, couples, and families. Jay uses a strengths-based approach, focusing on the positive possibilities for a successful outcome.
Jay has a broad-based background in the mental health field, with over 25 years’ experience. He was a professor of Psychology and Counseling at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as a Director of Clinical Pastoral Training at a State Hospital, and Director of two non-profit organizations focused on community crisis intervention and treatment for severely mentally ill. He has also served as an ordained pastor and professional therapist at two churches for over 18 years, as well as working as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice.
Jay is also a military veteran of the U.S. Army, having served 9 years as an Engineer Officer. Family life is a vital component and source of enjoyment. Jay has been married since 1981 to his life mate and best friend; has two amazing sons married to two awesome women; and he actively enjoys the blessing of four incredible grandchildren.
Jay is an avid reader, constantly seeking to continue to learn. He enjoys weight training as well as hiking, biking, and spending quality time with God and family amidst the natural wonders of the Big Island of Hawaii.
Jay works remotely with clients in North Carolina using Telehealth services including HIPAA-compliant video conferencing, and he works with clients in Hawaii both in person and through Telehealth services.
